Linked from here:
https://legends-of-rokugan.obsidianportal.com/characters/ashidaka-kakita-koutetsu

I would dearly love people to use this as a place to take notes for their games so that I can see anything relevant that I may use for future progression.

At minimum, please do me a favor and repost your Background, Familial information, and any obvious goals you may have. Also, if you are willing to do so/are interested, go to the back of the L5R Core Rulebook in the Book of Void and look at the 36 Plots. If one or two fit your idea for your character, please provide the information here along with some details.

Thank you.

“The sword is just a tool. It is the hand that gives it life. It is the hand that delivers death.”

Ashidaka Tetsu, the son the Ashidaka family daimyo, was impressed upon at a young age by the words of an ise zumi attending his father’s court. As a vassal family of the Kakita his father was expected to attend court as any other Crane lord despite his unique position as a master swordsmith. The Dragon visitor, already strange by his unique appearance as a monk of the Togashi Order, spoke of a philosophy that conflicted with the traditional ideals of a samurai.

The Togashi declared that a sword was a tool no different than a smith’s hammer, a peasant’s sickle, or a woodcutter’s axe. This in and of itself was considered blasphemy to some. After all, a sword was much more than a tool; a sword was the very soul of a samurai – a mark of one’s station within the Empire, traditionally passed down from father to son, and a physical reminder of one’s duty to their lord.

The Togashi further declared that in the hand of a samurai the sword was given purpose: it would either be brought to life or deliver death. He explained that as a tool it possessed two unique paths that paralleled the path of man. A samurai either walked the high road or the low road. Where the high road valued the preservation of life, the path of Honor, and noble sacrifice, the low road valued the necessity of death, the path of Dishonor, and the means to an end. This philosophy directly brought Bushido into conflict as the Togashi elaborated that not all virtues were just and true.

The words of the ise zumi left the court divided but like all guests, he eventually took his leave. Tetsu did not recall the nature of the monk’s departure for he could have been requested to leave, challenged, or left on his own volition. Nonetheless, the impressionable young Crane took to the spoken words and considered them in his own life as a samurai, swordsmith, and heir – words that would shape his views for the years to come.

Growing up as the son and heir of the Ashidaka daimyo, Tetsu was trained in the tradition of the Kakita. His father reasoned a true swordsmith needed to be intimately familiar with the blades he was expected to forge. His duty as a vassal of the Ashidaka family was to craft the famed Kakita blades of the Crane. He was trained as a swordsman by a sensei of the Kakita Academy by day and apprenticed to his father by night at the seat of the Ashidaka family.

On his gempukku he was tasked to forge a sword as his rite of passage. Tetsu labored in his family’s forge for two months, folding steel on an anvil. What he produced was a fine sword worthy of a samurai. While not a Kakita blade, it was a fine piece of work from a promising young swordsmith. When he presented the sword to his father, the Ashidaka Lord approved of the blade and presented it to Tetsu as the sword he would carry henceforth as a samurai.

Tetsu took the name Koutetsu on his gempukku, a parallel to his duty as a swordsmith; just as iron became steel, so had a child become samurai – stronger when forged by fire and pressure. He too gave his sword a name: Katsujinken, the life giving sword, inspired by the teachings of the ise zumi he still carried.

Koutetsu, the eldest of three, was the only son his mother gave his father. His mother Fumiko, formerly of the Dragon, was said to have been of the Agasha and learned in the art of swordsmithing. However, for as long as Koutetsu could recall she had never been involved in their family’s forge. She was a modest woman, lacking the strangeness of the Dragon. While not a beauty of the Crane or Scorpion, she was a dutiful and loyal bride to the Ashidaka Lord.

His two siblings, Ichiko and Niko, were born identical twins – a rarity in Rokugan. The two younger girls were considered gifted in the finer arts and invited to the Kakita Academy to study poetry, painting, song, origami, bonsai, and other arts. They played their appearances to their advantage, becoming tricksters of sorts – they enjoyed styling their hair similarly and wearing the same fashions to purposely confuse others.

Doji Kurotema, the Chief Hatamoto to the Juramashi Governor of Otosan Uchi, called upon his father for a favor owed. Several years after his gempukku he was sent to the Imperial City on behalf of his father. As a young lordling, a promising swordsmith, and capable swordsman Koutetsu was expected to represent the Ashidaka and the Crane amicably in court. He was, however, disadvantaged as he was not yet afforded the position within his family deserving of his birthright. As such he saw the opportunity to prove himself on the Empire’s largest stage.

1113, Month of Hare 6th Day

On my arrival to the Juramashi District of Otosan Uchi I immediately found myself thrust into a most peculiar situation. I came across an Imperial Judge who was beginning to sentence a samurai for a crime. I came to learn he had ambushed Doji Kurotema, the Karo to the Juramashi Governor - the same man whom I have come to this city to repay a favor my father owed - outside of a tea house. Before the sentencing was given Doji-sama arrived and had a change of heart. In a twist of fate I was given the man's broken sword and tasked by the Karo to repair the sword - a Kakita Blade - and mete out the punishment myself by dueling the man, championing Kurotema-sama against him. I accepted this task, albeit conflicted, and was escorted to the Governor's estate where I would stay until my accommodations were properly arranged for me. A forge, tools, and an apprentice were arranged for my task.

Kakita Douma, an apprentice to a resident Kakita swordsmith of Otosan Uchi, was assigned to me. While reluctant at first, he provided information to me to help me accomplish my task. I acquired a better set of tools than was provided by my patron until I finished my work. With the tools at hand and the assistance of an apprentice, I spent a week fixing the broken blade. It so happened that I could not repair the blade to my satisfaction. Afterwards, feeling concerned with something that bothered me during the reforging, I took the blade to an Asahina Ryoko. Asahina-sama was a representative of an order of priests known as the Blessings of the Eternal Kami. He took the time to bless the blade but informed me that malignant spirits clung to the blade despite being reforged. He proposed that the sword could be purified if I were to execute the man with it.

With this information I was immediately conflicted. I considered Togashi-sama's words and hoping to put to ease my troubled mind, I went to the Ochiyo District to meditate and speak with the ancestors. Unfortunately I felt my prayer did little to dismiss my own conflicted spirit yet I decided it was finally time to present the sword to Kurotema-sama.

I offered the sword to Kurotema-sama and he seemed to appreciate my work though I mentioned my discussions with Asahina-sama. He had spoken with Ryoko as well and agreed with the theology behind purifying the blade. He asked me if I was ready to accomplish the task and despite my misgivings of slaying a criminal, I said that I was. I spent the next few hours meditating and readying myself mentally and spiritually. I took the time to inspect the maker's mark on the blade and identified the sword as being forged several centuries ago by one of my ancestors. When the appointed hour came I attended the dueling circle where the criminal was sentenced before a ponderous crowd to the likes I had not seen before.

I afforded the Shinjo a bow of respect and strengthened my resolve for the task at hand. We settled down into our stances and the Fortunes decided what happened next. What resulted was my victory before the eyes of Juramashi. Following the demonstration the crowd dispersed and Doji Kurotema approached me announced that the Kakita Blade I reforged would be placed in a spot of Honor within the Governor's estate. Additionally, the sword would be named the "Sword of Execution" and I would wield it in the future to mete out justice to the enemies of the Governor. This causes me to bare a heavy heart as I complicate what I will be required to do.

Nonetheless this burden I now bear is a challenge I must overcome until my father's debt is repaid. My accommodations have improved at least as I have been assigned a comfortable residence in the northern portion of the district. I have requested some of my amenities from home to be shipped to my new dwelling. It will take adjusting to living alone in this city.

I have sent a letter to the Kakita swordsmith here in the city requesting tutelage after I felt my reforging of the blade was lackluster. Additionally, I am researching the history of the Sword of Execution. The spirits that haunt the blade, despite the sword being purified, are still off and perplex me.

It would also seem by word of Doji Kurotema-sama that my reputation has... Diminished. While my performance as a duelist was considered exceptional, the spin of the man's words has painted me more so as a grisly executioner. I feel ashamed and can't help but wonder, would Togashi-sama approve? These thoughts tear at my heart a great deal. Hopefully when my Champion arrives in the Imperial City we can discuss the matter surrounding the Sword of Execution and I can put to rest the troubles that currently plague me.

A letter from Koutetsu to his sisters...

Ichiko and Niiko-imouto,

You have my apologies regarding my lack of response to your inquiries upon the Imperial City. I have been kept busy in my duties which have consumed the bulk of my time here. As you may know, I have been assigned as a Karo to Kaiu Metsumoto, the Governor of Juramashi. As part of my duties I have been tasked with carrying the Blade of Execution, a sword forged by a Lord of the Ashidaka family that has been perverted of purpose. Needless to say I now serve as an executioner to mete out justice to the criminals of Juramashi. Both responsibilities weigh heavily upon my conscience as the sword has become a curse. You two understand better than most my disposition towards life and death so I hope you see how heavy my heart is. Already in my short time here I have executed a samurai and three peasants, a grim burden I have silently carried. Of course I am sure you are more interested in the Imperial City than my humble personage and the troubles that plague me.

Otosan Uchi is a large, sprawling labyrinthine place filled with all manner of samurai, merchants, peasants, wave-men, and pilgrims. The sheer number of people I see with my eyes on a daily basis would be impossible to count. In some ways it feels as if I am peering into a gilded cesspit as beneath the illusions of grandeur are the daunting realities of a dark and dismal place. The Lord Governor has become consumed with rebuilding the wall surrounding this district, ignoring the pleas of his people. The peasants do not give a proper samurai a wide berth, their lack of respect horrifying to young maidens of such refined senses. All manner of villains lurk in the shadows here as I hear rumors that remind me of the ghost stories we grew up hearing from grandfather.

Despite the soul soul crushing darkness that permeates this place I have found a small measure of nobility, a light within a room of shadows. A Kakita Chi-Yomi, a skilled lady swordsmith, has labored here in the Imperial City for nigh on twenty seasons. Her task is as tortured as my own but in it I see admiration. Her swords are works of art, their beauty surpassing what my memory recall of the blades stored in Shiro Ashidaka. I sought her to become an apprentice might I learn more, refining my art under flawless instruction. It feels there is no finer swordsmith here in the Imperial City. How can I live up to the expectations of grandfather and father without learning from the finest artisans in the Empire? If Chi-Yomi-sama were younger I might declare I had found an ideal match.

The responsibilities of being heir are not necessarily worth their toll, my dear sisters. While you see wonder in my position, I have found a pained existence. You are not ready to attend me here in the Imperial City; I am not ready for you to endure the crucibles found here. I am envious of your own positions and pray you understand my struggles here. My love for you demands you stay home and as a small appeasement, I hope the gifts enclosed with this letter please you.

All my love.

Your brother,

Koutetsu
[CHOP]

P.S. I am looking for Bayushi Akedare. Give me time.

Notes:

Courtier(Manipulation)/Awareness or Sincerity(Honesty)/Awareness Roll TN 25 to convince the Asahina to take time away to bless the blade. Failure means you weren't able to convince him that it was important enough to take time out of a conflicting schedule and you had to press on. Success gives you a single Free Raise during the creation process.

Meditation/Void roll TN 20 would normally not do anyting for the process. However, if you succeed on 2 Raises I will say that you have a clarity of vision which makes creation easier. This will give you a +2 bonus to the roll.

Determine Raises you are going to make for the creation of the blade.

Roll once to start, once to finish. Combined raises in both rolls has to meet or exceed two, total.

Let me know what you are trying to use those raises for, if anything specific. If you succeed, also remember that you will gain +0.1 glory point per Raise made on the roll.

Honored Father,

Salutations from the Imperial City. I hope this letter finds you in good spirits. I have found a rhythm here in Otosan Uchi that has kept me busy so forgive me for not writing sooner. I have received an appointment under Kaiu Metsumoto, the Governor of Juramashii, who I serve as Hatamoto. As part of my duties I have found myself unceremoniously assigned as the wielder of the Blade of Execution. Under the order of the governor I execute criminals of the district, a task which has done nothing for my reputation. During my tenor I have come to learn the sword was forged by our ancestor. I cannot explain how, but the spirit of the blade is displeased and I feel each day the sword yearns for freedom from its post. Each act it suffers only spurns its displeasure and I feel as if I suffer for it.

Some would say a cursed sword is merely a fabrication of story. Do you know of the history of such blades? I can't help but feel my disposition shift each day as I carry the sword. The blade may yet require I reforge it anew yet I fear reprisal. The circumstances are so mercurial I cannot help but consider fabrication. If I may inquire, by what means did you owe Doji Kurotema a favor? While I serve with devotion to my duty as your son, a great burden weighs heavily on my soul. It is my hope we may speak soon in person. Perhaps you may consider visiting the Imperial City?

In kinder news I have received invitation for Ichiko and Niko to attend Winter Court here this season. My friend Doji Ejio, third child of Doji Satsume, would use their services. I have guest rooms prepared for their stay at my residence in the city. I feel the winter would do well for them to grow as vassals of the Crane. If this is agreeable I will ensure all accommodations are prepared for their arrival this fall.

I hope I might see you before the year has closed. I have other news best reserved for you in person.

Your Son,
Koutetsu

A locked scroll case arrives at Koutetsu's home. Within is a simple, succinct message bearing the mon of his father. It is sealed tight, laden with so much wax it is obvious Ashidaka Hijikei wanted no one to read it but his son.

Koutetsu,

Word has come from the City of your reputation. I cannot say I am pleased. Your letter relieves but a small measure of my concern. I have never doubted your honor, but a man's reputation is all he has in this world and if you allow yours to be dragged through the mud it reflects poorly upon us all.

I cannot speak of Kurotema. I will not. There are some things a father cannot share with a son. There are some things too dangerous to share.

But there is one in the City you can speak to, if you are willing. Matsu Murabai fought against me in battle and she knows much of my past.

Be wary my son. And may the Fortunes forgive me for my transgressions.

Your Father,
Ashidaka Hijikei, Vassal of the Kakita
Lord of the Ashidaka

Matsu Murabai-dono,

I hope this letter reaches you in good tidings. I understand a samurai-ko of your position has little time to spare given the nature of your duties. My father, Lord of the Ashidaka, has impressed upon me your prowess in battle against him. It is because of this he has directed me to seek you out as he is unavailable to offer me the wisdom I seek. I hope you can afford me a single meeting within your no doubt very busy schedule.

With Honor,
Ashidaka Koutetsu,
Son of Ashidaka Hijikei

Koutetsu burns the first letter after writing it and then decides to write anew, changing his tactics.

Matsu Murabai-dono,

I hope the Fortunes favor your steps as you read this letter. My Lord Father, Ashidaka Hijikei, Vassal of the Kakita, Daimyo of the Ashidaka, has spoke highly of your honor and valor on the field of battle. As a token of respect and in an effort to foster friendship between our families, I would wish to present you with a gift of Ashidaka steel. Please acknowledge when such an arrangement between us would benefit your no doubt exhaustive schedule. I look forward to your reply.

With Honor,

Downtime Activities Post-Act I

Collect and purify the shards of the Blade of Execution from the site where he shattered the sword.

Speak with the Emerald Magistrates and House of Seppun regarding the death of Seppun Kossori, her Seppun guards and Kakita Chi-Yomi. Testify to the events that transpired to clear his name.

Purify Kakita Chi-Yomi's estate of the blood and any malevolent spirits from the death of the Seppun. Make arrangements to move into the Murabai district and take residence in Chi-Yomi's estate.

Contact Kakita Chi-Yomi's surviving family, if any, regarding her death. Arrange a funeral and travel to her estate in the southern Crane provinces to spread her ashes across the sea. Offer to return her seaside estate back to her family.

Visit Shiro Ashidaka and speak with the Kakita overseeing the stewardship of Ashidaka lands in his stead. Attempt to foster good will and kinship.

Search through Chi-Yomi's estate and sort through her personal effects.

Request the Order of the Blessing of the Eternal Kami to bless Chi-Yomi's forge (5 Point Favor).

Meet with Agasha Hiroshi and discuss his alchemical process for forging swords. Discuss a potential alliance between the Agasha and Ashidaka families in refining swordsmithing techniques in the Empire.

With the death of Kakita Chi-Yomi and the second death of a Seppun under contract with the late swordsmith, investigate the legal basis for Koutetsu to give the Seppun ANY of the 200 swords. Attempt to maintain as many swords as possible on behalf of the Crane.

Forge Kakita Chi-Yomi's 200th sword and deliver 100 swords to the House of Seppun (or the negotiated amount, if any).

Begin to build a network of allies and favors within the Crane and the Imperial City. Attempt to bolster his name so beyond a shadow of doubt no one can question his Honor or hi claim to the seat of the Ashidaka daimyo.

Look for suitable matches for Ichiko and Niko - men of unquestionable Honor whom will bring honor and prestige to the Ashidaka. Look for any opportunity to discredit Bayushi Akedare as a good match for Ichiko.

Keep an eye out for any potential suitors and with the aide of Doji Ejio, begin negotiations for marriage.

Seek out a kenjutsu instructor to help him overcome his doubt in his swordsmanship.
