(Kinotu) On the Southern Wall Empty
PostSubject: (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall   (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall EmptyMon Oct 12, 2015 1:32 am

Hot wind whipped the kimono about Kinotu's legs. He stood atop the great Southern Wall of the Miwaku Kabe looking out over the Toshisoto (Outer City) far below. He could see exactly the location of his dojo and imagined he could see the runners and students therein plying their trade. The Hare samurai smiled at the thought. So much of what he had done lately could not be openly shared, but this, his dojo, had the potential to be a thing of beauty.

Behind him, Kinotu heard the two wandering guards on duty pass by. He had been up here for over an hour waiting for his meeting and by now had near-memorized their path. Aside from the single guard at the top of the stairs, these two were the only men atop the Southern Wall at this time. The rest were far down in the city below, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of this so-called winter.

The duo passed out of sight and sound and Kinotu knew they would not be back for more than half an hour.

"You are waiting for me, I think?"

Kinotu turned to see the elder Asahina behind him. The man looked worn, haggard from hours of study and writing reports. Or, perhaps the man was exhausted spiritually from his attempts to delve into the mysteries of the Southern Wall. In either case, Kinotu nodded and the Asahina began to walk.

The two ventured to the mirrors embedded in this portion of the Wall. Kinotu knew them to be a gateway into the magic nature of the structure that only the Asahina seemed to be able to understand.

"Speak your mind, Hare. I have much to do."

PostSubject: Re: (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall   (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall EmptyTue Oct 13, 2015 3:53 pm

Kinotu walked alongside the Asahina, being careful not to get in his way. "Of course sama. To get right to the point, I have been informed that you have come into possession of some particular items a pair of tanto. The fact that it came to my attention tells me that I may already know their history and origin. I would be very appreciative if I could examine them and prove my suspicions. I am also interested in the work that you do here on the wall. From what am told about the legend of the wall, there could be oni and other demons trapped in the wall and these mirrors may be able to see if this is indeed true. Some may not fully appreciate the time and effort that you put into your duty. I am not one of those individuals." Kinotu watched with sincere interest as the Asahina inspected the mirrors.

(Kinotu) On the Southern Wall Empty
PostSubject: Re: (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall   (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall EmptyThu Oct 15, 2015 1:12 am

Asahina Imagari moved amid the thirteen talismans at a slow pace. With careful deliberation, his fingers passed over each surface and their casings. He spoke aloud in the tone of an instructor.

"Thirteen mirrors. Made of wood, fire, earth, water, and metal in successive cycles. Each designed to observed the spirits of the Southern Wall, to try an make contact, to watch for spiritual patterns, evidence of corruption, or the return of the legendary army of oni." Imagari paused at one of the burnished copper casings, a mirror of "fire," and smiled. "Thirteen mirrors and to this day not a single soul knows why that number."

Kinotu watched the man take notations down on a scroll as he moved about and whispered to himself. The Asahina looked weary. Haggard. Old.

"They speak to me, Usagi." Imagari stopped once more at a mirror of slick and polished glass. It looked as if its surface was wet, yet when Imagari touched it, no droplets came free.

"They tell me of the future. Of the past. Of the dangers in this world and the next."

Kinotu was vaguely aware that the mirrors led deep into an alcove, hidden by the shadow of the wall from all observers.

"I do not spend a great deal of my time interacting with the politics of this city," finally, the Asahina looked up to the Hare with a weak smile. Kinotu saw vague specks of blood at his gum-line. The man was sick.

"I hear of a rise in corruption, spiritual and economic and social. Now," Imagari tapped a wooden cased mirror with his fingers, "the mirrors brought this to my attention. You see, I believe that this rise in corruption is due to some powerful darkness that takes root. I am using the mirrors to reach out from the Southern Wall and discover its source."

Imagari looked back down at the stone floor of the Wall, fingertips touched upon his brow ever-so-gently.

"I have reached out to a visitor from the Phoenix. A woman called Asako Fumiko. Already I have been able to direct her towards a cell of bloodspeakers. I think that I am on the verge of discovering more." The Asahina looked up and stepped onto a thick stone so that he could overlook the lip of the Wall. Hands behind his back, he turned east.

"There, in the ruins of Tenari's Folly, I think I sense a danger. Some measure of dark power hides and given a few more days, I will be certain to find it. If," the Asahina turned away from the Toshisoto and looked instead back into the Ekohikei and the Forbidden City, home of the Emperor, "if I am not distracted by some other darkness. You see, I feel a second pull from within the walls of the Forbidden City itself."

A long, tense moment passed as a patrol maneuvered through the area. Kinotu watched them go. Without thinking, he realized that he and the Asahina had been alone for at least a quarter of an hour.

"Daggers, eh?" Imagari stepped down gingerly and turned to face a large mirror wrapped in steel. "I know of what you speak. Your request is denied." Without looking back at the Hare, Imagari crouched down to look into the current mirror.

"You see, they must be studied. They are nemuranai. I must examine them at length and it will take a great deal of my time. I have remanded them into the custody of the Crane Embassy for the time being, but I will get to them in say, oh," he waved his hand in a dismissive gesture, "another couple of months. Afterwards, I may work out a way for the Crane to return them to the Hare."

Imagari looked over his shoulder, eyes hidden by bags of shadow, and smiled that blood-toothed grin. "Provided of course that you can provide proof they belong to you."

The Asahina reminds me of someone I once knew.

Kinotu was shocked out of his growing frustration at the sound of the voice, so close to his ear.

The one I knew talked a great deal about studying as well. Though, I think he would have done more with these mirrors. I know a secret, Kinotu-san. Would you like me to tell it to you?

(Kinotu) On the Southern Wall Empty
PostSubject: Re: (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall   (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall EmptyThu Oct 15, 2015 3:37 am

Kinotu sighed on the inside as he knew what was going to happen next. These kinda talks with Jama Suru never ends good. Kinto responds to Suru,"The fact that you didn't just go ahead and tell me makes me think that you want something in return for this information. Fine. I'm sure you realize the predicament we are in now that he is focusing on your position. I'm not quite ready to spring the trap. If I can't redirect her to the Forbidden City, I will have to escelate my plans Luckily I believe I may be able to convince him without giving suspicion."

Kinotu blinked twice before responding to the Asahina,"That is a shame. I can prove without a doubt that are indeed property of the Hare and the line of the clan champion no less. If this were the case, is there a good reason why they couldn't be returned to their proper owner until you are ready to study them? The Hare will be more than willing to allow the study if they are returned."

After the Usagi relays his intentions he switches topics,"You say that no one has ever figured out why there are thirteen mirrors or why they alternate in a specific pattern? I am no master of divination, but I do know how to look into the deeper meanings of things. I have a hypothesis, a rather good one in fact, as it pertains to this mystery." Kinotu looks into one of the mirrors that is angled to where the Asahina can see Kinotu's reflection,"It is sad to think that because you are ill that you may not live long enough to come to the same hypothesis or conclusion as I. Yes, I am perceptive and skilled enough in medicine to see when someone is sick. I applaud your adherence to your duties despite the physical toll it takes on your body. Perhaps, I will inform your successor of my conclusion after the daggers have been returned to the Hare for he or she will have more time to experiment and will not have the experience of reading the mirrors as you have."

Kinotu changed his gaze to the direction of the Forbidden City,"So if I heard you correctly, you are going to allow a darkness to fester in the Forbidden City in leiu of taking out a group of Bloodspeakers in some ruins? You do realize that the Son of Heaven returns to the city in two months? As someone who has hunted Bloodspeakers before, wouldn't it be wiser to take out the evil in the most sacred part of the entire city with enough time to cleanse it before the Emperor's return?"

Kinotu turned to the old Asahina,"I am very interested in your work and believe you are the best one to do and should continue for much longer to come. I would like to provide you with medicine to help treat your sickness, tell you my hypothesis on the mirrors, and assist you with these 'sources of evil' that you have been detecting. Unfortunately..." Kinotu shrugged and gave a knowing look,"I am very busy as a Magistrate of the Inner City, and it could take...another couple of months for me to clear up my schedule. If the daggers were proven to be property of the Hare and returned in kind, it would help me in my duties as magistrate to go by quicker and my schedule to open up. I will say that if my hypothesis is right, you do not have much time before you will miss an opportunity for an experiment to prove me right or wrong about the mirrors and will have to wait longer for another chance."

(Kinotu) On the Southern Wall Empty
PostSubject: Re: (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall   (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall EmptySat Oct 17, 2015 2:08 am

Asahina Imagari returned to his examinations as the Hare spoke. He moved from one mirror to the next, eyes focused solely on the task at hand. When Kinotu finished, the Asahina paused before the thirteenth mirror and mumbled to himself.

"This one has always been the darkest. Connected to the Void, perhaps? Or something more distant?"

Imagari stopped. His head tilted to the side and he slowly rose. Kinotu noticed the Asahina's faraway look vanish in an instant.

"Wait..." Imagari turned fully, eyes wide, lips pulled back in a snarl. He lifted an accusatory finger to point at Kinotu. "You threaten me? You, the child of an unimportant minor clan my own clan could buy and sell one-thousand times over and not miss a single koku of the Emperor's taxes? You," Imagari snarled, "presume to tell me what to do?"

Oh, I think you've misjudged your tactic. Jama Suru sounded...amused.

"Listen, Hare, and listen well. Those daggers belong to the Asahina family and the Crane. If and when I and my clan have finished our study, your Clan Champion may bring forward a formal petition to the Emperor himself to win them back." Imagari spat blood on the wall and wiped his lips with a sleeve. "As for my illness, that is my concern."

The Asahina spun back around to look into the thirteenth mirror. "And we go after the darkness in Tenari's Ruins first because we know where the danger lies. The tactic will bear fruit and give us direction to the Forbidden City. You show your ignorance, Usagi. Where would I even begin to look without knowledge? Fool."

The mirrors, Jama Suru whispered into Kinotu's mind from afar, call out. They require only the secrets that one such as you can offer. I require nothing for this knowledge, Usagi, but your continuing will and follow-through. My benefit comes alongside your own.

The Asahina bent down over the mirror and whispered some soft incantation. He seemed to realize that Kinotu was still there and spoke without looking back. "I think our meeting is at an end."

Not hardly. Jama Suru mocked. The mirrors are linked to the army within the Southern Wall, my student. They require something the Asahina has never considered giving them. Give it to them now. Just a drop on any will do. And you will see their power open to you.

Atop the Southern Wall a strange wind began to howl.

(Kinotu) On the Southern Wall Empty
PostSubject: Re: (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall   (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall EmptySun Oct 18, 2015 9:58 pm

Kinotu gently and quietly pulled his tanto out of its saya just enough to where he could press the tip of his thumb against the blade to create a small cut then sheathed it. Kinotu said with a smile,"You called my bluff Asahina-sama. I certainly am a fool and apologize for any offense I have caused you. In the spirit of my apology, I would like to offer my services to help in the investigation of the ruins. I may not be the most tactful of speakers, but I do have some worth in combat. I shall relay the information to Asako Fumiko for you if you so wish. Is there anything I can do to assist you at this time?"

As the Hare talked to the man with his backed turned to him, Kinotu waved his hand over a mirror of water next to him and squeezed a single drop of blood out of his thumb onto the surface of the mirror. Just keep him talking he thought. He needed to buy some time for him to investigate the new insight into the mirrors. After the blood was spilt, the Usagi quickly put pressure on the cut to stop the bleeding. If the old man thinks he is a dumb, backwater minor clan fool then Kinotu will play the part. It was better plausible deniability that way. The old man will get what is coming to him soon enough anyways.

(Kinotu) On the Southern Wall Empty
PostSubject: Re: (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall   (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall EmptyMon Oct 19, 2015 2:54 pm

Kinotu bled on the mirror...

Imagari continued examining the mirror before him. It was large, easily the size of a man, framed in wood with a surface so smooth and black it looked like a thick oil.

This is why I enjoy you, Hare. Ever willing to experiment.

"This one has always seemed the darkest," Imagari mumbled to himself. "A connection to the Void, perhaps?"

Kinotu felt the wind whip up. Somewhere in the distance, in both directions of the Southern Wall, equipment fell and drew attention away from the mirrors.

No guards would be coming anytime soon.

Look inside, Kinotu. Look.

When the Hare looked at the mirror Imagari worked on, he saw the images swirl. He was certain that the Asahina did not yet notice the strange movement because the man was busy taking notes in his journal.

They are a gateway.

A great howling sound bellowed forth from within all thirteen mirrors and for a split second Kinotu knew he would be caught. But though his first reaction was to kneel, hands clapped to his ears, the Asahina did not respond.

He couldn't hear the screaming of the demons within the Southern Wall, but Kinotu could.

They beckon. They beg. They want more blood. They want you to summon them forth. For now, I think, we could feed them.

OOC:
- Kinotu knows that another patrol is likely to come within the next quarter hour.
- To get down from the Wall, he would have to pass by a guard at the stairs and be seen. Unless he manages to find another way.
- If he decides to try to attack Imagari, roll Stealth vs. Investigation. If you succeed, you will be considered ambushing him for the purposes of Initiative (he gets a penalty).

(Kinotu) On the Southern Wall Empty
PostSubject: Re: (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall   (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall EmptyTue Oct 20, 2015 3:52 pm

Kinotu racked his brain for all the shadowlands powers and maho spells he could think of. Surely there was a way to make it look as though they were both attacked by bloodspeakers and the Asahina just happened to be the target and was killed? Then he saw the blood that the ill man had spat on the wall. Yes, the old man had given him the method for his death.

Kinotu turned away from the Asahina to look at one of the mirrors and squeezed the hidden blades in his gauntlets into his hands, drawing the necessary blood for the spell. He spoke the words under his breath as if mumbling to himself. The power of Jigoku flowed through his veins. Now he had the power to survive his next move. He whispered the dark incantation as he took a sideways glance at the old man. Then he pulled out his dagger and slit his throat, missing one artery but nicking the other to provide the amount of blood to end the Crane's life. The Hare's blood poured onto the mirror he was in front of as he watched what happened to his victim.

(Kinotu) On the Southern Wall Empty
PostSubject: Re: (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall   (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall EmptySun Oct 25, 2015 12:21 am

That was certainly not what I expected you to do. You are a constant surprise, Usagi. Perhaps a bit unwise, however...

The Southern Wall came to life in a way Usagi Kinotu could not possibly have imagined. Days or weeks later when he looked back on this moment, if indeed he could, he would understand that something within the Wall must have been awaiting this exact moment to strike.

For the moment that did not matter.

A storm came out of nowhere. Wind howled along the top of the Southern Wall. It screamed through the stones, ripped up anything not solidly connected to the Wall, threw back guards all across the Ekohikei.

It consumed the world.

Then came the rain. It was as if the world was angry. Or the city. Or, perhaps, some powerful spirit of water. No matter the source, the sudden torrential downpour was like an angry slap on the hard stone of the Southern Wall. It masked all sound, even the horrific screaming of Asahina Imagari.

Kinotu looked up, throat still bleeding across the mirror in profuse amounts. There stood the Asahina scholar with eyes wide in abject fear. His journals ripped free from his hands and the tattered remains flew into the waiting storm.

Thunder clapped and lightning flashed. Kinotu saw the gaping maw of the mirror open. He felt a raw, unbridled darkness long hidden within reaching out.

You may have over-performed.

Long, dark claws reached out of the mirror and wrapped the Asahina in a careful embrace. It was as if they did not want him harmed. The man stood still, unable to move from total fear. As Kinotu watched, lightning flashed again, and in the blink between one raindrop and the next, Asahina Imagari was gone.

Problem solved. Here comes another.

The mirror below Kinotu came to life as well. His blood soaked the surface in a thick, oozy blackness.

No...that was no longer his blood. Some other creature crawled its way forward form his mirror in a way that fascinated the young maho-tsukai.

And then it split apart.

And then again.

And again.

Three protoplasmic creations rose up from the puddle. In the thundering storm, three identical samurai took shape and rose up to their full height.

Each looked exactly like Usagi Kinotu.

Each had their knives out and moved in a blur. Two of them flanked him, twirled knives in a dizzying display. The third vanished somewhere behind him.

Lightning flashed again and all moved. As the knives came on fast, Kinotu could hear the shouting of guards far, far away responding to some other catastrophic blow from the storm.

What an interesting development.

OOC: This might get confusing, so bear with me. Each creature that appeared rolls Initiative first. If you roll higher on their first rolls, they will use Luck to try to beat you. If you reroll and beat them, they will use luck again to beat you. I have noted instances of their luck being used below.

If they beat you on initiative, they will use Luck instead to beat your TN to be hit. Also noted below. Obviously, if they run out of Luck before the rerolls would happen they don't get to do them. I have listed all possible rolls here for speed.

The creatures summoned copy you in nearly every way (notable exception is Dark Fate).

Linked Rolls for Below

(Kinotu) On the Southern Wall Empty
PostSubject: Re: (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall   (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall EmptyMon Oct 26, 2015 5:27 pm

"It seems you are correct master. Perhaps a little less theatrics next time. Fortunately, these imposters don't have what I have...the will to live NO MATTER THE COST!"

The daggers came hard and fast, but he knew their tactics and attacks better than anyone. Bob, weave, duck, block, and parry...they were good but not good enough. Kinotu dodged all their blows with the grace and agility of a true Hare. He waited for an opening to make his move.

He leaped into between the two flanking creatures and spun to face all three. "You think some mere copies are as good as the original? Don't make me laugh..." The Usagi cackled with mad laughter as he cut a gash into his forearm. The blood poured then completely stopped. He could feel the power coursing through his veins. His nature may be exposed, but he refuses to go down like this, no matter how poetic it would be. The Usagi faced his doubles with an evil gleam in his eye. "Now you die..." He flung himself at his foes with all the fury of a Hida Berserker.

OOC:
Initiative: 26
http://orokos.com/roll/337268

Spent void point to increase Armor TN by 10, and Defense Stance increased it by another 5 for a total Armor TN of 47. All attacks missed even after luck rerolls.

Dealt 3 wounds to myself to cast Gift of the Maker to gain Protection of the Dark shadowlands power, which makes me invulnerable. 1 free raise from technique to reduce casting time to one round. Forgot to subtract 10 from the roll from wound penalties but still rolled a 23 after penalties.
http://orokos.com/roll/337269

The Asahina should be dead after the first round of combat from the Bleeding spell. I know the oni was trying not to hurt him, but he may be dead anyways.
Round 2 fight!

(Kinotu) On the Southern Wall Empty
PostSubject: Re: (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall   (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall EmptyFri Oct 30, 2015 3:09 am

Asahina Imagari collapsed forward, a body empty of life, devoid of blood, and shadowy arms reached out from within the dark mirror before him. Kinotu watched through the whipping wind and torrential screaming rain as Imagari, once steward of the Southern Wall, vanished into his research.

Two copies whirled about the Hare with sure precision, but he dodged and weaved and bled and laughed. They could not harm him now with their copied daggers.

The third, the one behind him, said a word in a strange tongue. The language of the damned, the words of Jigoku. An oni's words.

In that instant all three copies dropped their knives and lunged together. They would not try to kill the Hare with their blades. Kinotu realized instantly what they, what it, what this demon of copied flesh was going to do. Two of them reached out with arms of flesh, but the third...

Manesuru no Oni. What an interesting problem, my student. Look what you have done.

The third copy melted as it flowed forward, its sticky protoplasmic flesh connecting to the other two, connecting all three in a strange dance. Kinotu felt a tugging, a strange sensation as the copies copied him again.

They are what you are. Do you know what harms an Invulnerable oni, dear Kinotu? Itself.

They raced to wrap their arms and bodies about him. They were going to throw him from the Wall.

Initiative Roster:
1. 57 Copy 2
- Full Attack: Grapple. Result: 32
2. 37 Copy 3 (Initiative Roll)
- Full Attack: Grapple. Result:29
3. 35 Copy 1
- Full Attack: Grapple. Result: 37
4. 26 Kinotu

PostSubject: Re: (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall   (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall EmptyFri Oct 30, 2015 11:20 pm

Kinotu was struggling to dodge the creatures attacks. The unusual tactics were wearing him down. They didn't have a scratch and he was very injured he couldn't kill them with his bare fists alone before they would finally overpower him.

"Well master, I know when I have been beaten. Better chance at surviving a fall than against this thing. It will make my story with the guards more convincing anyways...if I live."

With that Kinotu jumped off the wall and aimed for one of shacks near the wall below. If he dies, his secret will die with him and will finally be at peace.

OOC: defense stance puts his armor TN at 38. They all miss. The rest is self explanatory.

(Kinotu) On the Southern Wall Empty
PostSubject: Re: (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall   (Kinotu) On the Southern Wall EmptyWed Nov 04, 2015 11:07 pm

Peace? No, I think not. Not now and probably not ever, my student.

Kinotu fell a very long way. The rain fell heavy and fast and lightning flashed overhead. He saw two of the three figures stagger to the edge of the southern wall. Heavy stones collapsed and two of them slipped over the side to follow him.

Between the darkness and the torrential downpour, Kinotu was not sure if anyone heard the crash or the sounds of his fighting. He knew that tomorrow there would be damage and a missing priest, but for now he simply fell.

It seemed liked forever. Time to contemplate the end of his life. Time to consider what would happen to his soul when it departed from Ningen-Do. Would he be taken to Jigoku, the Realm of Evil? Would he be swallowed up by some demon, dark and hateful, punished for eternity?

What would happen to Jama Suru? Would he get free? Would the Inquisitor find him? Would he usher in a new reign of Iuchiban and destroy the world?

So many questions that he could not answer. So, instead, he simply fell.

When he hit the shack below the darkness swallowed him, but he did not die, not yet. The warm embrace of corrupted blood magic embraced the Usagi in a cocoon that shunted away the brunt of the trauma.

He collapsed through the top of a makeshift shack and had a fleeting glimpse of the old man and sons who slept within before his body and his fall killed them all.

The floor gave way to the underground world below. Stones followed the Hare and drove him down, down into the earth and ruin of the hut. The heavy earth pinned him. Arm twisted, legs snapped, but he did not die.

The hole filled with debris and bodies, stone and, eventually, began to fill with water. The River of the Golden Sun drifted up into the heavens and vented her wrath back down to the waiting earth below. Usagi Kinotu could feel the powerful spirit of water in every droplet venting her rage and frustration upon him.

The hole filled with water and he began to drown.

What would happen to him when he died? Where would he go? What would the world be without his presence?

The hole was full of water and he was pinned beneath the rock. Darkness threatened to consume him. He turned his head, just enough, and he saw the two other bodies of the demon trapped with him. They struggled beneath stones. Something about the weight of the spiritual water kept them from transforming.

Good. At least they would die with him.

Death does not come easily to the wicked.

Jama Suru’s voice was faraway and it made Kinotu smile. How could he be saved? Surely this was the end.

The stone on his chest cracked.

He blacked out, swallowed by the darkness. Just before eternity consumed him he felt himself fall once more.

Hours later, when he woke, he was deep in a hole beneath the hole, soaked to the bone and in agonizing pain. He had fallen through the hut, through the earth, and through the tunnels below. He was in a pit half-filled with water, sealed off from the world above. Only a small tunnel through the water led the way out.

Kinotu knew it would take him deep underground and, eventually, into the waiting bay. It would be as it was before.

He had survived.
