Day Five

The early morning had been unusual. The Unicorn woman, remarkable for her physical beauty alone, surprised Ejio and the Imperial audience with a delightful display. Ejio had seen her all morning practicing, steadying herself, anxious to be done with the day's events.

It appeared art came to her quite naturally with any instrument that allowed her to manipulate the wind. The banging of the taiko, the twanging of the biwa, even the whistling of the shakuhachi all flowed through the Otaku like the blood in her veins.

Yet though her nerves were steeled in battle, she was woefully unprepared for the intimidation of her audience. Ejio outperformed her, but felt in his heart that had they been out on the open plains alone that it might have been a different story.

And now the afternoon promised to provide just as much in the way of the exotic.

Togashi Mirashi, the strange sometime ally, sometime ally of his enemy Akedare, stepped up before the Imperial Court and bowed with a flourish. In an instant, his outer kimono was flung away and he stood bare-chested and proud. Fans snapped open and more than a few present averted their eyes.

Ejio could not shift his gaze. He felt it before it started, deep in his bones. The Togashi spun on his heel and flexed great muscles. He spoke not one word as he ascended the performer's dais. His very presence created an odd mixture of curiosity and revulsion.

The naked flesh.

The tattoos.

The birds. Ejio could not take his eyes from the birds, mystical and quite real. A Phoenix on his back, a Crane with great open wings across his chest. A Hawk mid-dive over his center, his stomach.

The Mockingbird tattooed across his throat.

Ejio closed his eyes and felt it. There, deep down in the center. The Center. The chi, the heart and soul of the Dragon before him. Ejio breathed in one long breath and knew without seeing Togashi Mirashi was doing the same.

Ejio's lips parted as if to speak and from somewhere in the room the sound of a startled flock of birds could be heard. Or was that in his head? Ejio could see without seeing that the living art across Mirashi's flesh was moving.

Was flying.

The words were unintelligble, but the song did not need to be understood for its meaning to be felt. It was a song of pure loneliness. Ejio could see the clouds in the sky part as he rose, higher and higher, up into the expanse of the sky.

He felt the feathers ripple along his flesh.

The wind slid across his form like a lover's caress.

Each syllable of the song lifted him higher until, there at the very end, he felt his eyes open and he gazed down at a world far below. Insignificant. Magnificent.

The clapping roared spontaneously after Mirashi's performance. Ejio felt a tear on his cheek. He had never seen a sight so remarkable.

It would be an impossible act to follow.

Mechanics:
Otaku Kan'U
Perform: Biwa/Agility: 54
http://orokos.com/roll/362554

Mirashi (Song)
Perform: Singing/Awareness: 52 4 Raises (3 Free)
http://orokos.com/roll/362554

Ejio wins one of the two contests of Day 4 and loses the other.

Let me know if you want to do some interaction after the performance.

On each day of the Turquoise Championship, as well as the Amateur Day preceding the tournament, the Emerald Magistrate Kuni Akira performed his unique art of crafting kami-infused sushi. With the aid of his ally, Doji Ejio, ten specific individuals were chosen each day to attend Akira's presentation, with Ejio masterfully choosing those who should partake each day.

Each performance was structured the same. The patrons would be escorted to their predetermined seats arranged around a large table in the inn's garden. Ejio and Akira worked out the seating arrangements, Ejio with political machinations on his mind and Akira considering how each person should be served and in what order. The outside venue was chosen primarily because of the near-guaranteed agreeable weather.

Kuni Akira was positioned at his station opposite all of his guests before any of them arrived. He wore his silken dark blue robes, considering this occasion one of the few that warranted something finer than roughspun. His knives, his stone plates, and all the ingredients for the day were all prepositioned. The Crab greeted each patron with a polite nod, but nothing more. His craft demanded his entire focus, especially for the unique gathering of patrons each day.

The chef remained silent for the duration of the presentation, with the exception of his whispers to the kami as he cooked. He would welcome conversation for those interested upon completion of his duties, but not before. Adjacent to the plates of each patron rested a high quality piece of paper with an elegantly scripted description of the day's meal by the chef's own hand (Calligraphy/Intelligence 32).

Day 0, Osano-Wo, Fortune of Fire and Thunder
Above: Spicy Tuna, Avocado, Sriracha
Below: Spicy Crab
Kami: Fire

The Fortune of Fire and Thunder is honored with a simple yet powerful combination of ingredients. The components of this roll offer a thick texture for the patron's tongue, but the spices used, when combined with a prayer to the Fire Kami, propel the dish's heat to beyond the threshold of most. This roll is a reminder of the fury that was Osano-Wo.

Day 1, Benten, Fortune of Romantic Love
Above: Eel, Honey
Below: Crab (Soaked in Grapefruit Juice)
Kami: Air

Love is as kind to us mortals as it is cruel. The patron should experience sweet from the honey and tart from the grapefruit juice, symbolizing the joy and sorrow that come out of romantic love. The Air Kami were asked to lend a capricious aura to the roll to accent the natural flavors, rather than enhance them.

Day 2, Fukurokujin, Fortune of Wisdom
Above: Octopus
Below: Avocado, Cucumber
Kami: Water

Known to be a reclusive animal, the octopus was chosen today to represent wisdom. The octopus hunts with guile, not brute strength, and it understands the value of patience. Consuming this roll will, with the aid of the Water Kami, help each individual reflect upon their own lives and the role wisdom has to play in their futures.

Day 3, Hotei, Fortune of Contentment
Above: Caramelized Sugar
Below: Fried Mochi
Kami: Earth

Bliss. Comfort. Joy. This roll honoring Hotei was designed to overwhelm the patron's palate with sweetness. The combination of the warm sugar and cool mochi held inside a light batter dances on the tongue and demands another bite. The presence of Earth Kami in the roll will help the patron enjoy remaining in place, savoring the taste for as long as possible.

Day 4, Daikoku, Fortune of Wealth
Plate: Fugu
Kami: Water

A bite of the fugu, if prepared incorrectly, is fatal. In consuming this dish, the patron is acknowledging the fate that awaits all samurai and, futhermore, is embracing the notion that true wealth comes not from possessions, but from being amongst the living. A prayer was offered to the Water Kami to aid in mental reflection.

Day 5, Ebisu, Fortune of Honest Work
Above: Oyster, Yuzu Glaze
Below: Carrots, Daikon Root
Kami: Earth

Whether a laborer toils in the fields or in the sea, they honor Ebisu daily with their actions. This roll combines simple ingredients from the earth with a more difficult to acquire item from the sea, and coats them all in a tart glaze. Spirits of Earth were asked to inhabit the vegetables and impart the combined feelings of fatigue and contentment that come with a hard day's labor.

Day 6, Jurojin, Fortune of Longevity
Above: Shark, Eel Sauce
Below: Roe, Toshikoshi Noodles
Kami: Earth

While there are those who long for a glorious death with a katana in their hands, many more would relish spending yet another year with their loved ones. This dish honors Jurojin with shark, egg, and toshikoshi noodles, a staple crop considered to grant long life. The patron may note the prominent flavor of the noodles; the chef's request of the Earth Kami.

Day 7, Bishamon, Fortune of Strength
Above: Swordfish, Yuzu Glaze
Below: Asparagus, Cucumber, Shrimp
Kami: Earth

The swordfish is powerful and elegant, a corollary to the samurai of Rokugan. Samurai maintain their position through the controlled application of strength, not wanton carnage. The Earth Kami have been asked to reinforce the fortitude and resiliency of the samurai who consume this meal, quietly supporting their noble purpose and station.

Notes About Sushi Rolls
Every day's sushi was made with a total of 5 Raises (4 Called and 1 Free from the associated Commune spell).

If any ingredient shouldn't exist in Rokugan, please consider whatever the in-universe alternative. The descriptions here were meant more as guide for what the experience would be for the patron.

I'm not sure what utility there is in the calligraphy, but it just seemed like it would be cool.
